The pressure that professionals are continually receiving is to reduce water consumption, not to increase it. At the same time, they must continue to produce "GREEN GRASS" results. Putting a carefully measured amount of water in a clearly defined area is an essential part of a successful water management system. At Rain Bird, we recognize the water distribution challenges that professionals face. Rain Curtain™ nozzles were developed specifically with these challenges in mind.
How Is The Rain Curtain™ Technology Better?
All water that travels through the air will be affected by air movement such as wind. The fact has been proven that the larger the surface area of a water droplet, the less it will be pushed off course. Smaller, or misting, water droplets are more likely to be blown off course as they travel through the air. The term for describing this phenomenon exists and can be measured using the sail index. It is the method of measuring the performance of a sprinkler in windy situations. This type of testing is being performed at the Center for Irrigation Technology (CIT) at California State University, Fresno. CIT uses special laser equipment that actually measures water droplet size.
When compared to the competition, the Rain Curtain™ nozzles produce larger droplets and thus have less of a chance to be blown off course. These nozzles generate a coherent main upper stream with a fan-shaped curtain of water below. When viewed from the side, the water thrown from the sprinkler actually looks like a curtain of raindrops. The difference is so pronounced, it can be viewed with the naked eye (no laser needed).
The Rain Curtain™ performance is consistent. These nozzles ensure even water distribution. The competition’s less advanced nozzles are able to "throw" the water, but tend to leave dry spots around the head. With the Rain Curtain™ nozzle technology, a special "ramp" pulls a controlled amount of water from the main stream to water close-in. Water is not only thrown, but also is able to water close-in with no seed washout.

The time of day is also important; our systems start at 3:00 a.m. and run until about 8:00 a.m. This eliminates evaporation of water to the sun. When you water in the late afternoon or early evening, you produce an environment that promotes fungus and mildews.
